Understanding how your data is being used.
The Glimpse Photobooth is a speculative design installation that explores how AI and social media platforms interpret and commodify our personal data. As a playful photo booth, it simulates a data collection experience through a fictional AI. By making the invisible visible, The Glimpse Photobooth invites Gen Z users to question how digital consent works, who benefits from their data, and how their identity is shaped by technology. It turns passive data collection into an active, reflective experience without collecting any real data. My Contributions: Designed an interactive photobooth experience to educate Gen Z on digital privacy and consent in social media. Conducted user research and user flows to map the emotional journey and points of interaction of users from awareness to action. Prototyped a chatbot and visual word cloud to simulate real-time data collection and spark user reflection. Applied speculative design principles to create an ethical, immersive photobooth experience that simplified complex data policies.
Problem
In today's hyperconnected world, people, mostly Gen Z, are constantly sharing data online, often without fully understanding the implications. While platforms present terms of service and consent pop-ups, the reality is that consent is usually passive, uninformed, and disconnected from users’ lived experiences. This creates a gap between what users think they're sharing and what systems infer about them.
Solution
The Glimpse Photobooth is an interactive, AI-powered installation that simulates social media data collection in a playful yet reflective way. By chatting with a bot and receiving a personalized “digital shadow” Polaroid, users experience firsthand how their data can be interpreted and commodified sparking curiosity, awareness, and action toward better privacy practices. We have went to great lengths to be able to define each interaction point a user would go throughout their journey which ultimately led to this deisgn and concept. Steps. Poster attracts the user’s attention User enters the booth User interacts with the AI User learns how Instagram collects and uses their data User sees and receives the Polaroid User scans the QR code to learn how to take control of their data
